Meet Richard, Facilities Manager at The Wyldewoods
As we edge closer to the grand opening of The Wyldewoods, we’re thrilled to introduce the passionate and skilled team bringing this vibrant new community in Chester to life. Each member is dedicated to fostering wellbeing, independence, and connection for our future residents. With an onsite restaurant, diverse amenities, and an exciting events calendar, The Wyldewoods is more than a place to live—it’s a lifestyle.
Today, we’re spotlighting Richard Read, who joined us in Summer 2024 as Facilities Manager. Richard’s wealth of experience and hands-on approach make him a key player in shaping The Wyldewoods into the thriving community we envision.
A Day in the Life of Richard
Richard’s role is all about keeping things running smoothly and supporting both residents and staff. A typical day starts with opening the communal areas, meeting with the team, and checking emails. Each morning, the department heads gather to discuss the day ahead—whether it's planning events, coordinating support, or troubleshooting. But no two days are the same, and that’s what Richard loves.
“I’m looking forward to the day we welcome our first residents in January 2025,” Richard says. “It’ll be exciting to put into practice everything I’ve learned over the past few months.” As part of The Wyldewoods onboarding program, Richard has been shadowing Martin, the Facilities Manager at Gradwell Park, through Retirement Village’s buddy system, gaining valuable insights to hit the ground running.
From Farm to Facilities
Richard’s journey to The Wyldewoods has been as unique as it is inspiring. Originally a farmer, he sold his farm and transitioned into a maintenance role at a care home owned by a neighbour. What started as “helping out” turned into a 16-year career in the care sector. He then joined Bupa, where he spent 25 years in facilities and maintenance management roles, honing his skills. When his last care home was sold, Richard saw an opportunity with Retirement Villages and was drawn to the energy and vision of The Wyldewoods.
Why The Wyldewoods?
“The chance to work in a lively, vibrant workplace really appealed to me,” Richard shares. “I’m excited to build relationships, help people, and create a real buzz in the community. I also love the idea of The Wyldewoods being a hub for the wider Chester community—a place where local residents can join us for lunch and see what the future could look like.”
As an integrated retirement community, The Wyldewoods offers more than just beautiful living spaces for residents—it’s designed to be a place where connections thrive, and independence is supported. Richard is eager to help bring this vision to life for both residents and the local community.
As a Flintshire resident, Richard now enjoys a scenic commute on the expressway to Chester, excited to be part of something truly special.
A Hands-On Approach
When asked about the skills he brings to the table, Richard describes himself as a naturally hands-on person. “I like turning my hand to everything,” he says. It’s this practical mindset, paired with his deep care for people, that makes him perfect for the role.
For me, the most rewarding part of the job is simple: helping residents—even if it’s just through a friendly conversation.
Beyond The Wyldewoods
Outside of work, Richard’s life is just as full and rewarding. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he plays hockey at a high level and is aiming to join the Welsh Over 60s Men’s team in the coming year. He’s also a passionate football fan and a die-hard Everton supporter.
When he’s not on the pitch or cheering from the stands, Richard loves spending time with his family. A proud grandad, he’s teaching his grandson to swim, passing on a life skill he believes everyone should have.
Richard’s dedication, experience, and approachable nature are sure to make him an integral part of The Wyldewoods. As we prepare to open our doors, we couldn’t be more excited to have him on board.
