Pat’s Story: Embracing a New Chapter at Charters Village

Pat and her partner, Mike, moved to Charters Village in May 2024, eager to embrace a fresh chapter in their lives. For Pat, the decision to settle here was driven by a desire for convenience, support, and being closer to her loved ones.

Closer to Family and Support

When Pat and Mike decided to move south, Charters Village was the perfect choice. Its location—between her son in Lingfield and her daughter in Bexhill-on-Sea—provided the ideal balance of being close to family while also offering the support they needed.

“Charters ticked all the boxes,” says Pat.

Pat, now in her 80s, and Mike, 94, have been together since 2018. Having known one another for many years, their relationship deepened after both lost their respective partners within months of each other.

A Life Full of Change and Adventure

Born in Frensham, Farnham, Surrey, Pat spent much of her childhood moving across the country. She lived with her grandparents in Birmingham and attended a boarding school in Essex, where she met her late husband. In their 60s, Pat and her husband retired to a golf lodge in Northampton, determined to stay active. To avoid the trap of “becoming lazy” in retirement, they both took up golf, a passion that kept them engaged and moving.

Pat’s career was just as dynamic as her personal life. She worked for the gas board, moving wherever the work took her, before pursuing a cookery course in London. With children in tow, she later taught evening cookery classes and catered for parties. As her children grew older, she became Matron at a boys' boarding school, a role she enjoyed for five years.

Staying Social, Creating Memories

While Pat enjoys quiet moments with Mike, she also embraces Charters' vibrant community. She’s a regular at the Bridge Club, describing it as “a bit of fun,” and plans to join the Knit and Natter group soon.

Pat has also formed a close friendship with Eileen, who was introduced to her when she first moved in. They quickly discovered they had a lot in common and now enjoy spending time together.

Evenings at Charters follow a comfortable routine for Pat and Mike, with a glass of wine at 6pm—gin being reserved for “high days and holidays!” While Mike prefers a quieter lifestyle, Pat stays engaged through social events and activities.

Together, they’ve also shared some wonderful adventures, including a memorable trip to New Zealand. Reflecting on her past, Pat fondly remembers her 60s as “the best years,” filled with exploration and joy.

Community and Convenience

Before moving, Pat didn’t fully understand the concept of retirement living, despite regularly visiting her son’s mother-in-law at Charters. But as she explored different options, Charters' sense of community and the variety of activities stood out.

“The level of activity and support available is impressive,” Pat shares.

For her, one of the best aspects of life at Charters is the reassurance that everyday issues are easily managed. “The team is always there if you need them,” she says. She’s also impressed by the prompt service from the maintenance team, who “come and sort things for you quickly.” The combination of support and convenience makes life at Charters stress-free and enjoyable.

Embracing Change

Moving has been a learning experience for Pat, and her son's advice stuck with her: ‘You’re only going to need more help, not less!’

Her advice to others considering a retirement village is just as clear: ‘Don’t wait too long. Embrace it as a new chapter.’"

As Pat continues settling into life at Charters Village, she is finding joy in the balance of support, community, and staying active. With its warm and welcoming atmosphere, Charters Village has become the perfect place for Pat and Mike to embrace this chapter of life.
