Embracing new beginnings
This month marks an exciting chapter for Thrive Living as our newest integrated retirement community in Chester, The Wyldewoods, welcomes its first residents!
We caught up with Philip, 75, who is moving to The Wyldewoods with his wife to find out what led them to make this exciting leap.

What inspired you to explore retirement community living?
It all started during Covid. With health concerns on our minds and no chance to travel abroad, my wife and I began to re-evaluate our priorities. We realised we simply didn’t need such a big house and garden, especially as gardening had become much more of a chore. We began looking for smaller homes near Chester, a city we love for its culture and buzz —and that’s when we came across updated plans for The Wyldewoods.
What drew you specifically to The Wyldewoods?
I attended a Community Liaison Group meeting to learn about The Wyldewoods’ ethos of positive ageing, purposeful living, and connected communities. The focus on independence with support when needed felt like the perfect fit, so I called my wife straight away! Everyone we’ve met during the sales journey has been fantastic, from the Consultants Carol and Joanne, to the on-site team — they truly reflect the company’s values. We reserved a south-facing apartment near the clubhouse, and it’s so reassuring to know we’re supported, whatever the future holds.
What made you confident in being one of the first to reserve here?
As a former Operations Director, I’m used to looking at plans and knew exactly what my wife
and I wanted. She’s the strategic one — we make a great team! We’ve seen loved ones struggle with loneliness, and The Wyldewoods, designed for energetic, like-minded people, really appealed. With six blocks, green spaces and stunning views, it felt like the perfect place to enjoy life, especially with a drink on our balcony on a summer’s evening. My wife had slight concerns about noise, but the soundproofing, insulation, and landscaping have made that worry disappear. Plus, we like that it’s powered by green energy… and the communal areas feel like a 5* hotel!
Did you consider any other communities before choosing The Wyldewoods?
We did a lot of research. We have a lovely home and didn’t want to settle for anything less for
our next move. We found a mix of retirement communities — some dated, others in the wrong location. The Wyldewoods was the perfect compromise. We loved the spacious apartments, the balconies, and the fact that everything is brand new, from the appliances to the flooring and heating. Ultimately, it was an easy decision!
What aspects excite you the most?
We’re both fit and active, so we’re looking forward to being part of everything that’s going on, plus enjoying the bar and clubhouse. It really feels like the best of both worlds: vibrant community living, with peace and privacy when needed — for example, we like that you don’t have to walk through communal areas to reach your front door. With such friendly staff, I already feel like I have a new family here. The Community Coordinator’s role is to keep the social calendar busy. I love the idea of the local schools visiting and hosting interesting events to keep everyone engaged and uplifted. We can’t wait to embrace life here.
How do you envision your day-today life once you move in?
We both love to keep busy — my wife still works, and I have multiple interests that fill my time. We’ll continue doing our thing, but are very much looking forward to going on holiday without worrying about the garden! When we’re less mobile, it gives great peace of mind to know we can still easily access the on-site gym, grab a coffee, or pick up milk and bread from the shop — it’s those little conveniences that really help.
Do you have any uncertainties about moving in?
My wife is 10 years younger, so she initially wondered if we were too young, but after seeing The Wyldewoods for herself, she was completely onboard! There were a few wobbles along the way — especially when the for-sale sign went up — but recently while out shopping, we met a lady buying a sofa for her new apartment in a, you guessed it, retirement community! Her enthusiasm about the move quickly put our remaining doubts to rest.
What would you say to others who are considering a move to The Wyldewoods, but are hesitant?
It’s all about circumstance and personal choice. If you’d like to be part of a safe, connected, supported community with great facilities and activities available, it’s a brilliant choice. We’re so excited to start this new chapter and create something special with the wonderful people here.
