Gordon Elmbridge

Making the decision to move in later life is never easy. For many, the thought of leaving a beloved home, downsizing, and starting afresh can feel overwhelming. Gordon, a resident at Elmbridge Village, understands this journey all too well. After nearly two years of searching, he finally found his “happy place” at Elmbridge in September 2024, and he hopes his experience can help others considering the same path.

Finding the
right place

Like many retirees, Gordon had several reasons for considering a move. “I wanted to be closer to my family, still live independently, but also have the peace of mind that if I ever needed support, it would be available,” he shares.

However, the process of finding the right retirement village wasn’t straightforward. “There were so many options—some new, some converted older buildings, all offering retirement living,” he explains. “Deep down, you know what you’re looking for, and you have to consider not just your needs now, but what you might require in the future—while also staying within your financial means.”

For Gordon, the search took time, patience, and careful consideration. He wanted to balance independence with security, ensuring that his future home would support both his current lifestyle and any potential care needs.

It is comforting to know I am living in a real village where I can enjoy life independently, knowing that if I need help it is on hand.

Navigating change

Once Gordon had made the decision to move, the next challenge was selling his home in Exmouth and downsizing—a task that can be daunting in itself. “I had to decide what to keep, what to let go of, and where I was going to move,” he recalls. “At the time, I had no idea when or where I’d end up, which made the process even trickier.”

He also had to think about practicalities—would he want to be in a town or a more rural setting? What facilities would be available? Would he need access to transport, or would he still be driving? “There’s a lot to consider,” he admits. “You need to think about what kind of lifestyle you want and whether the village can support that.”

Settling into Elmbridge Village

After nearly two years of searching and visiting many retirement communities, Gordon moved to Elmbridge Village in September 2024. From the very beginning, he felt welcomed. “My arrival and the greeting from the village team were so important to me,” he says. “Moving house is stressful enough, but meeting new people for the first time in a village where I didn’t know anyone could have been daunting. Instead, it was relaxed and enjoyable because of the friendly and helpful staff.”

He also appreciates the strong sense of community at Elmbridge Village. “Making new friends and socialising with like-minded people of a similar age has been an enjoyable experience. It’s fascinating to hear about other people’s life experiences,” he shares.

Support when needed

One of the biggest factors in Gordon’s decision was knowing that support would be available if needed. “Embridge is a true village where you can live independently but have the reassurance that help is on hand,” he says. “The on-site Wellness Centre is a great comfort. I know that if I ever need assistance, my needs will be met.”

But perhaps most importantly, his move has given his family peace of mind. “They’re all busy working, but now they don’t have to worry about Grandad,” he laughs. “They know I’m nearby, in good care, making friends, and enjoying life at Elbridge Village.”

Pause for thought

Gordon knows first-hand how overwhelming the decision to move can be, but he encourages others to take their time and trust their instincts. “It’s demanding, and it requires a lot of decision-making,” he admits. “But apart from input from family and friends, it’s worth building a relationship with the places you’re considering. At the end of the day, there will always be a bit of gut feeling involved.”

For him, the move to Elmbridge Village was the right choice. “I’m still adjusting to the changes, but in my heart, I know I’ve made the right decision.”
