Embarking on a New Adventure

When Eileen moved to Charters Village in September 2024, she was turning the page to a new chapter—one centred on community, connection, and enjoying life to the fullest. After a lifetime of travel, raising a family with two children under two, and a 60-year marriage, Eileen sought balance: staying close to family, staying active, and finding a vibrant social life.

A Life of Travel and Adventure

Eileen’s story starts in Borneo, where she was born before moving to Australia as a child. Her father, a sea captain, took the family around the world before they eventually settled in Cardiff, Wales, after World War II. Later, she spent over 20 years living in Oxted, Surrey, before making the move to Charters Village.

Eileen began her career with an apprenticeship as a hairdresser. One memorable moment from her early days in the profession involved the iconic Raymond Bessone—better known as Mr Teasy-Weasy—who wanted to dye her hair an apricot shade, but her father said 'absolutely not!' Eileen later ran her own mobile hairdressing business, often with her children in a buggy while working. Eventually, she transitioned to pharmaceutical work with Unichem, which allowed her to work school hours—perfect for balancing her career and family life.

Eileen and her late husband made the most of their retirement years, traveling extensively and escaping British winters. For 35 years, they spent their winters abroad, owning a home on the beach and enjoying the Caribbean. Their days were filled with adventure, and they didn’t spend a single winter in the UK!

Community and Connection

Eileen’s decision to move to Charters Village wasn’t just about downsizing; it was about finding a warm, welcoming community. Recommended by friends and drawn to the village’s social atmosphere, she was delighted to find that “everyone spoke to me and each other when walking around.” This sense of belonging made Charters the perfect place to call home.

Family was another key factor in her move. With one son in East Grinstead and another in Christchurch, New Forest, Eileen enjoys spending Sundays with her family and grandchildren. Living at Charters allows her to maintain strong family ties while building new friendships.

The Joy of Staying Active

Life at Charters Village is about more than just a change of address—it’s about staying active and involved. Eileen enjoys her daily walks (weather permitting!) and takes the bus to East Grinstead twice a week. One of her favourite activities is chair ballet, which she describes as “good fun with lovely music.”

She also enjoys playing Rummikub and Scrabble, along with participating in the many daytime events offered at Charters. Though she loves staying busy, she also cherishes her quiet evenings and makes sure to be “in bed by 9 pm” to recharge for another full day!

While her days of playing golf are behind her, she remains an avid reader and frequently borrows books from the onsite library. She’s also made her apartment uniquely hers by transforming the second bedroom into a cosy dining space.

A Friendly Community

Since moving to Charters, Eileen has made a good friend in Pat, whom we introduced her to. They quickly found they had a lot in common and now often spend time together. For Eileen, the biggest draw of moving to Charters was the chance to meet new people and build new friendships. She says, “I like something to do each day,” and that’s exactly what Charters offers—whether it’s joining in an activity, having a chat with a neighbour, or simply getting out and about in the village.

Eileen is also delighted with the friendly maintenance and gardening staff at Charters. “They’re always cheerful,” she says, and the positivity is infectious.

Advice for Others Considering a Move

Looking back on her decision, Eileen has some advice for anyone thinking of making the move to a retirement village. “Don’t hold onto things just in case,” she says. Moving to Charters has taught her to live more simply and focus on the things that truly matter—relationships, community, and staying active. Eileen admits she wishes she’d made the move earlier, but she’s glad to be where she is now, surrounded by great people and new opportunities.

Eileen’s life is a testament to living fully, embracing change, and always staying connected to those around you. From her adventurous childhood to her busy career and now her active lifestyle at Charters Village, she has embraced every opportunity to grow, connect, and enjoy life.

As Eileen says, “What gets me out of bed in the morning is the fact that we’re still here!” And with a welcoming community, a wealth of activities to enjoy, and her family close by, Eileen is making the most of every day at Charters Village.
