A resident of Roseland Parc village swam 7.5km, raising £460 for Cornwall Hospice Care, Mount Edgcumbe Hospice, St. Austell.
Deb, 65, a former swimming tutor, completed 742 lengths of Roseland Parc’s private swimming pool in front of fellow residents, friends and family on Monday 28th February. The targeted distance measures the distance between Pendower House where Deb lives (in Roseland Parc) to her nearest beach, Pendower beach. The distance between these two is 7.42 miles as the crow flies.
Mount Edgcumbe Hospice was the first ever hospice in Cornwall and was voted Roseland Parc’s charity of the year. So far, the village has raised a total of just over £1000 through other initiatives including a Christmas raffle and will continue to raise more throughout the year.
Deb comments: “I swim about 1.5km in the pool most days so this became my training, although I’ve never swam this far in one day before. The swim was completed using front crawl, some full stroke, some arms only, some legs only. I maintained my pace throughout, despite tiring towards the end.
“After having to cancel the sponsored swim two years ago due to the pandemic, I’m glad I’ve finally been able to complete it and, thanks to my friends at Roseland Parc, we’ve been able to raise money that will support Mount Edgcumbe Hospice to provide their excellent services to the community."
Melanie Evans, Village Manager at Roseland Parc, says: “We’re so proud of Deb’s achievement and her contribution towards raising money for our charity of the year. All our residents really got behind Deb to encourage her and make this a special event, for a really important cause. Moments like this really demonstrate the strength of our community here in Tregony and we look forward to hosting more fundraisers that help us to support those working in and for our community.”
